Norman, Okla. - The Missouri softball team fell to 18-21 on the season (5-2 in the Big 12 Conference) after suffering two losses (5-0 in game one, and 1-0 in game two) in their doubleheader against the No. 14/17 Oklahoma Sooners at the OU Softball Complex.
In game two of the doubleheader, freshman catcher Kathy Masterson got the Tigers out of a jam when she put out pinch runner Nikki Holt in a fielder's choice in the bottom of the third inning. With the bases loaded, the Tigers were able to hold off the Sooners allowing only one run on four hits. Oklahoma's April Valdez scored the Sooner's only run with catcher Heather Scaglione offering up a sacrifice fly to centerfield.
Freshman Leanne Bowers made Missouri's second big save of game, closing out the fifth inning with a catch in centerfield while the bases were loaded.
Outfielder Morgan LeCluyse had Missouri's only hit on the game. With two outs on the board, LeCluyse hit a single in the first inning, and advanced to second on an error by Oklahoma outfielder Mariee Mena. The inning came to an end on a popup by junior Heather Kunkel.
Junior Erin Kalka and freshman Erica Peterson split time on the mound. Out for four innings, Kalka had one strikeout and gave up six hits, while Peterson had one strikeout allowing only one hit.
Opening game one at noon, the Sooners jumped to an early third inning lead on a two-run homerun by catcher Heather Scaglione. Missouri was never able to recover, only managing one hit in the fifth inning on an infield single by freshman Kathy Masterson. The right-handed batter outran the throw after hitting the ball between the pitcher and third baseman.
Freshman pitcher Erica Peterson made her 26th appearance on the mound for Missouri, striking out OU's second baseman April Valdez for Missouri's second out in the final inning of action.
Giving up nine hits in game one, it was the most the Tigers have allowed since the March 26, game against Texas State (9-3). The loss by shutout was Missouri's first since dropping to No. 1 Arizona on March 14 (7-0) at Tempe.
Next up for Mizzou will be a single game with rival Kansas, to be played April 14th in Lawrence, Kan. at 5 p.m.
