COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The University of Missouri track and field squad opened their outdoor season Thursday at the College Station Multis hosted by Texas A&M. After the first day of the two-day events, Tiger post-collegians Fiona Asigbee and Michelle Moran are placed first and second in the women's heptathlon along with Jessica Stockard placing as the number one collegian after the first four events.
Asigbee and Moran lead the women's "gold division" heptathlon after day one. Asigbee racked in 3,455 points, a personal best for day one. Asigbee was helped by personal-bests in the 100-meter hurdles and shot put events. Moran is in second place with 3,299 points. Stockard (Godfrey, Ill.) also had a day one personal best and leads all collegians in the competition with 3,276 points. Also for the women, sophomore Liz Young finished the day with 2,505 points.
On the men's side, junior Brandon Goebbert (Hinsdale, Ill.) is in fourth place in the men's "bronze division" decathlon after day one. Goebbert's 3,335 points was spurred on by a personal-best in the shot put event. Freshman Bjorn Sommerfeldt has 3,630 points and is seventh place in the "gold" division and is on a near personal-best, NCAA provisional qualifying pace. Sophomore Hans Uldal has 3,443 points after day one in the "gold" division.
The weather could not have been better for the competition as the temperature hovered in the low 80s with some wind out of the south. The weather is expected to be just as good tomorrow, with temperatures in the 70s.
