LINCOLN, Neb. - The University of Missouri competed Friday in the day one of the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational hosted by the University of Nebraska. Day one's competition included the women's pentathlon and the first four of seven events of the men's heptathlon.
Former Tigers and current Missouri track and field staff members Michelle Moran and Fiona Asigbee took first and second places respectively in the pentathlon. Moran's score of 4,026 qualifies her for USA Track and Field's Indoor Combined Event Championships. Moran and Asigbee's score was back in fourth all throughout the five events of the indoor pentathlon. Moran took back the lead after an exhausting 800-meter run that saw many runners hit the track near the finish line. Asigbee also broke the difficult 4,000-point barrier completing the day 16 points behind Moran. Asigbee was the 2003 Big 12 Pentathlon Champion, and Moran was the conference champ in 2000.
Sophomore Jessica Stockard just missed the NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 3,700 points with an 8th place finish and 3,597 points. Teammate junior Liz Young finished ninth with a score of 3,547.
After day one of the heptathlon, former Tiger and four-time Big 12 Champion, Knut Sommerfeldt holds a narrow 38-point lead with a score of 3,028 partly due to recording an indoor personal-best in the shot put ring. Nebraska's Chris Richardson is in second after placing first in the 60-meter dash and high jump events. Junior Brandon Goebbert stands in ninth with a score of 2,535 after season bests in the shot put and long jump events, and freshman Bjorn Sommerfeldt has 2,061 points after not recording a height in the high jump.
A full slate of activities awaits the Tigers on Saturday and gets underway at 10 a.m. with day two of the heptathlon concluding, field events starting at 10 a.m., and regular track events beginning at 11 a.m. For a complete schedule and complete coverage, visit mutigers.com.
