AMES, Iowa - The University of Missouri track and field team participated in the first day of the Iowa State Classic on Friday. The team's distance medley relay took first place and captured an NCAA provisional qualifying mark in the process. Senior Jennifer Bennett also clinched first place in the women's pole vault after a month-long injury delay.
"It's been a good meet so far, just like we expected," said Dr. Rick McGuire, head track and field coach. "This women's DMR is one of the fastest at Missouri and one of the best in the nation, all four members of the team ran fast and ran strong, and it's always exciting to see that on your relay team. And it was great to see Jennifer Bennett back to competing again."
The women's distance medley relay team won their event with a time of 11:18.24, only three seconds off an automatic qualifying time. The winning time also places the team of Jill Petersen (1200m), Jessica Stockard (400m), Ashley Patten (800m), and Amanda Bales (1600m) second all-time on Missouri's all-time list. The relay time is the eighth fastest in the nation and number one in the Big 12 Conference, by over 12 seconds, compared to those recorded before the weekend.
Senior Jennifer Bennett (Ashland, Mo.) won the women's pole vault event with a mark of 12 feet, 5 inches (3.80m). Bennett, an indoor all-American in 2003, came off a month-long injury stretch to win her first meet back.
Senior Holly Scherder finished third in the women's weight throw with a toss of 59 feet, 4? inches (18.11m).
School record holder, sophomore Tim Ross (Alto, Mich.), finished the 5000-meter run in a time of 14:27.20 for tenth place in a 75 runner field. Junior Josh Davis (Liberty, Mo.) broke the all-time Missouri top five with an indoor personal-best of 14:38.08. Chase Hall finished close behind Davis with a time of 14:40.31, despite being tripped to the ground by another runner.
