Springfield, Mo. - The University of Missouri men's and women's swimming and diving teams had an impressive showing against Drury University as the #22 Mizzou women were able to defeat the #3 (D-II) Drury women 150-90. The Missouri men fell to the #1 Drury men 137-106.
"The Drury men swam extremely well today and came to the meet ready for us but our lack of depth really hurt is today," said Brian Hoffer, Missouri swim coach.
The men were only able to win three events on the night, two of which came from the divers. Sophomore diver Evan Watters finished in first place on the 1-meter board with his score of 355.95 and fellow sophomore Aaron Wionzek finished second with his score of 280.28. Watters' score on the 1-meter board is a new Missouri school record and a new Drury pool record. Watters and Wionzek also finished first and second on the 3-meter board.
For the women, freshman Amy Charley set a personal best in the 200-yard backstroke as she finished first with her time of 2:05.28. Swimming in the 1,000-yard freestyle for the first time, Charley finished second.
In the diving events, the Missouri women swept the top three spots on both boards. On the 1-meter board, freshman Kim Massaro finished first followed by junior Anna Massey and sophomore Nicole Frazier. On the 3-meter board, Frazier finished first followed by Massaro and Massey.
"The women did really good today. We were able to get off to a good start and were able to hold off Drury and get the win," said Hoffer.
The Tigers next meet is Saturday, January 17 at 1:00 pm in Springfield, Mo. against the Southewest Missouri State Bears.
