Tucson. Az. - After eight days of rigorous training, the Missouri swim teams went up against some of the toughest teams in the country to see how they stand at the midway point of the season. The #22 Missouri women, now 5-3 on the season, were able to defeat Northern Arizona University 149-88, but fell to #6 Arizona 173.5 - 61.50. The men were defeated by Purdue 174-62 and #7 Arizona 167 - 66.
For the women, senior Rebecca Wolfe and juniors Mariona Costa and Amanda Morford all had exceptional meets. Wolfe, a 2004 Olympic Trials qualifier, finished second in the 200-yard butterfly with her time of 2:06.17. Costa also had a second place finish in the 200 breaststroke as she finished in 2:21.00. Amanda Morford also had an excellent meet as she added a second place finish in the 200 backstroke.
On the men's side, senior co-captain Tyler Belanger finished second and third in the 50 and 100-yard freestyle events. Senior Dustin McKnight added a fifth place finish in the 200-yard freestyle as he finished in 1:46.09. Freshman Peter Willett was able to set a new personal best in the 1,000-yard freestyle with his time of 9:44.73.
"After eight days of very intense training we were all pretty tired, but I was pleased with several of the performances today. Arizona was our third top-15 opponent this season. Going against such tough opponents has helped us see how we stack-up against the top teams in the nation," said Missouri Head Coach Brian Hoffer.
Missouri swimming is back in action January 16th and 17th as they travel to Springfield, Mo. to take on Drury on the 16th and Southwest Missouri State on the 17th.
