
Mizzou Opens Season with Impressive Victory

The Tiger volleyball team opened the 2003 season by defeating Montana State 3-0 (30-13, 30-16, 30-9) on the first day of the Quality Inn Tiger Invitational. Also recording a win on the tournament's first day was Arkansas, who downed Toledo 3-2 (30-21, 28-30, 23-30, 30-27, 15-12).
Mizzou was on the attack most of the night against MSU, hitting .323 as a team, which included posting a .441 mark in the final game. The Tigers also recorded 17 service aces, which tied a MU record for most aces in a three-game match. Lindsey Hunter had seven of those aces and Shen Danru added six..
Four Tigers recorded hitting percentages over .400 led by freshman Jessica Vander Kooi's .667 mark. Vader Kooi recorded nine kills and added 10 digs, as she got the start in her first collegiate match. Nicole Wilson, another freshman in her first game at MU, had a .600 hitting percentage with three kills.
Danru led Mizzou with 15 kills and hit .419, while Lisa Boyd hit .500 with seven kills. Mary Lauren Smith added nine kills.
Hunter, who led the Big 12 in assists in 2002, recorded 42 against Montana State. Sara Parks led the Tigers with 14 digs.
Missouri will return to the court at the Hearnes Center on Saturday for two more matches in the Tiger Invitational. Missouri's first match is against Toledo at 12:30 p.m. The Tigers then take on Arkansas at 7 p.m.
