
Christian Cantwell Wins Shot Put Title at NCAA Regional Championships

COLUMBUS, Ohio - At the first ever NCAA Mideast Track and Field Regional Championships the University of Missouri track and field team has an individual champion. Tiger senior Christian Cantwell won the shot put title Saturday at the regional championships. Overall the men finished 11th and the women finished 14th in the Mideast region.
Cantwell, a three-time Big 12 outdoor shot put champion, won threw shot put with a throw of 67 feet, 11.75 inches. Teammate Russ Bell finished fifth with a throw of 60 feet, .25 inches. To qualify for the NCAA Track and Field Championships an athlete must finish in the top five of an event. Bell, in addition to qualifying in the shot put, also qualified in the hammer throw and discus.
The Tiger track team had two women qualify for the national meet on Friday. Jennifer Bennett qualified in the pole vault breaking a school record with a mark of 13 feet, 6.25 inches and finished second in the event. Janae Strickland finished second in the shot put with a throw of 52-1.75.
The NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships are June 11th-14th in Sacramento, California.
