ANN ARBOR, Mich.-- - The Missouri softball team had its season come to an abrupt end on Thursday when Wright State upset the Tigers 3-1 at Region 7 play of the NCAA Tournament. Mizzou, who lost to Notre Dame earlier in the day, was eliminated from postseason with the loss to WSU.
The game began as a pitchers dual. The first base hit for either team did not come until the bottom of the fourth when MU freshman Joanne Loethen singled to right. Senior Sara Vassmer followed with a single and Heather Kunkel made it three straight hits as her double drove in Loethen for the game's first run.
Mizzou's lead did not last long, as Wright State lead off the top of the fifth with a double by Laura Workman who was later driven in to tie the game. WSU then added two more runs in the sixth inning to take the 3-1 lead, which it was able to hold on to for the victory.
Freshman Samantha Fleeman started in the pitcher's circle and went 5.2 innings, giving up three runs, two earned, on four hits. She struck out four and walked none. Erin Kalka came in and pitched 1.1 scoreless innings.
Daisy Mettlach was one of the few bright spots at the plate for Missouri as she was 2-for-3 in the game.
With the loss, Missouri's season comes to an end with a final record of 31-20. Mizzou was 0-4 in the postseason the year, falling twice in the NCAA Regionals after going 0-2 at the Big 12 Conference tournament.
