The Mizzou softball team had its six game wining streak snapped on Saturday at University Field, as No. 7 Nebraska defeated the Tigers, 11-2. Mizzou remains in third place in third place in the Big 12 Conference standings heading into Sunday, the final day of the regular season.
Nebraska scored runs in all but one inning.. The Cornhuskers got home runs from Peaches James, Nicole Trimboli and Amanda Buchholz. James' home run was a 2-run homer in the second inning, while Trimboli and Buchholz each had solo shots for NU.
The Husker batters got to Tiger starter Erin Kalka early, as Kalka lasted just 2.1 innings before being relieved by Samantha Fleeman. Kalka gave up five runs, all earned, on six hits. Fleeman gave up six runs on nine hits in 4.2 innings.
NU pitcher Peaches James was in control on Saturday, recording a complete game four hitter for her 20th win of the year. Mizzou's first hit in the game did not come until Daisy Mettlach singled in the fourth inning.
The Tigers scored both of their runs in the sixth inning when Jeni Schellert doubled to drive in Heather Kunkel and Rachael McGinnis.
Missouri is now 30-16 on the year and 11-5 in the Big 12 Conference. The Tigers are in third place in the Big 12 Conference with one day left in the regular season. They are a half game ahead of Oklahoma. A MU win on Sunday or a Sooner loss to Texas A&M would give Mizzou the third seed in next week's Big 12 Tournament. A loss on Sunday for Mizzou coupled with an OU win would give the Tigers the fourth seed.
The Tigers and Cornhuskers will be back in action at 1 p.m. on Sunday at University Field. Sunday will be senior day, as seniors Kristen Burke, Melanie Fisher, Sara Vassmer and Ingrid Werner will be honored before the game.
