MANHATTAN, Kan. - Sophomore RHP Garrett Broshuis (Advance, Mo.) pitched six strong innings, and three different Tigers picked up a pair of hits to help Missouri to an 8-3 win over Kansas State at Frank Myers Field on Saturday. Mizzou's win streak is pushed to a season-long-tying seven games, which matches the longest stretch since 1999.
Broshuis allowed just three hits - his fewest this season - and four walks, striking out six Wildcats. Freshman righty Nick Admire (Lebanon, Kan.) threw the last three innings for his second save, allowing a two-run homer to Tim Doty in the eighth.
"The big thing about the win today is that it's our fifth in a row in conference, and it's been a while since we've done that [1996]," Head Coach Tim Jamieson said. "Offensively, we did the things we needed to do to win, today; we didn't need to hit any out of the park. We just took what was available. Garrett Broshuis and Nick Admire did very well. The thing about Broshuis is that he has had trouble getting out of jams. He had a couple today and did a great job of staying focused on every pitch."
Junior 2B Jeremy Hernandez (Aptos, Calif.) got the Tigers on board with two out in the second when he hit an 0-1 pitch off Wildcat starter Sean Clancy (1-2) that scored junior DH Lee Laskowski (Clayton, Mo.).
Mizzou added a pair of runs in the third on a sacrifice fly to right by junior C Brad Flanders (Smithville, Mo.) that scored senior CF Jayce Tingler (Smithville, Mo.). Junior RF Ryan Rallo (Chesterfield, Mo.) scored one batter later on a Clancy balk.
Redshirt freshman LF Tyrone Roberson (St. Louis, Mo.) scored his 10th run of the season on a two-out bunt single by Tingler in the fourth. Freshman SS Adam Garrett (Sikeston, Mo.) singled and scored on a Rallo double.
K-State plated a run in the fifth when Broshuis allowed the first two batters to reach base. Brett Williams then doubled to left to score Ryan Baldwin. After allowing walks to the first two K-State batters in the sixth, Broshuis sandwiched a Baldwin flyout between a pair of strikeouts to get out of that jam.
Mizzou got a pair of insurance runs without a hit in the seventh. A pair of walks, two errors and and RBI groundout made the score 7-1.
The Tigers will go for the series sweep of the Wildcats on Sunday at 1 p.m. A win would give Mizzou its first six-game conference winning streak since the formation of the Big 12 Conference in 1997.
