COLUMBIA, Mo. - True freshman Stephan Holst (Independence, Mo.) made his first career start an excellent one, and the Tiger bats came alive against Maryville in a 19-1, seven-inning win Wednesday night at Taylor Stadium/Simmons Field.
Holst (1-0) scattered three hits and a run in his five-inning collegiate debut. He also struck out two Saints in leading Mizzou (12-5) to its 10th win in 11 games. The Tigers scored five or more runs in three separate innings, including six in the bottom of the seventh before rain and lighting forced a premature conclusion to the game.
Senior OF Jayce Tingler (Smithville, Mo.) had his hitting streak extended to 14 games with a first-inning single; he finished the night 3-for-3 with a pair of runs scored. His high-school teammate, junior C Brad Flanders (Smithville, Mo.), was given the night off to leave his 13-game streak untouched. His replacement, sophomore Brent Lacy (Ballwin, Mo.), was 3-for-3 with a pair of RBI and a run scored.
Junior OF Ryan Rallo (Chesterfield, Mo.) homered to left to lead off the sixth to move the Tiger lead to 9-1. Junior OF Kyle Johnson (Omaha, Neb.) hit a grand slam to right later in the inning to plate a quartet of unearned runs off reliever Marty Bachert.
In all, Mizzou had 16 hits and drew seven walks off Saint pitching.
Missouri hits the road for a three-game weekend series at defending NCAA National Champion Texas to open the Big 12 Conference season. The lidlifter of the series commences Friday night at 6:30 p.m. from Disch-Falk Field in Austin.
