Baseball Splits Pair With UNC-Wilmington

WILMINGTON, N.C. - The University of Missouri baseball team split two games with the UNC-Wilmington Seahawks Friday at Brooks Field in Wilmington, N.C.
The Tigers resumed the first game of the series, which was suspended due to rain in the bottom of the sixth inning yesterday, and won 12-1. Hot Tiger bats proved too much for UNC-Wilmington, newcomer Jeremy Hernandez hit two home runs while freshman James Boone, junior Ryan Rallo and junior Cody Ehlers each hit one home run. Tiger sophomore Justin James picked up his first victory of the year and Andy Shipman got the save. James pitched five strong innings giving up only one run, two hits, and struck out three. Shipman came in and pitched four exceptional innings giving up only two hits and no runs. The Tigers fell behind in the first inning but took the lead for good in the third on a two-RBI double by Zane Taylor which gave the Tigers a 4-1 lead.
In the second game of the day, the Seahawks used a four-run sixth inning to break open a 5-0 lead on the Tigers. UNC-Wilmington sophomore Ronald Hill pitched 6 1/3 innings of scoreless baseball, giving up only four hits and recording one strikeout. Seahawk designated hitter Jon Davis went 2 for 4 including a double, single and scored a run. Two wild pitches in the sixth inning, one by starter Garrett Broshuis and one by reliever Matt Stallings, led to two Seahawk runs. Broshuis pitched 5 2/3 innings giving up five earned runs on seven hits and the sophomore struck out two. Ryan Rallo's ninth inning two-run home run gave the Tigers hope, but the Seahawks closed out the game 5-2. Missouri baseball head coach Tim Jamieson said, "I thought we swung the bats well and we pitched well in the first game but we didn't swing the bats well in the second game. We cannot give up four runs (in the sixth). If we could limit that to two, 3-0 is a lot easier to come back from than 5-0. We still have chance to win the series tomorrow and that is what we are going to focus on."
The Tigers finish up the series against the UNC-Wilmington Seahawks on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. The Tigers will send junior Derek Roper to the mound to face Seahawk senior Brad Overton. All Tiger baseball action can be heard on KTGR-AM 1580.
