MANHATTAN, Kan. - The University of Missouri track and field team started the indoor season by sending six throwers to the Kansas State All-Comers meet in Manhattan, Kan. Junior transfer Conrad Woolsey (Excelsior Springs, Mo.) and senior all-American Janae Strickland (Houston, Texas) had second place finishes in the shot put event, and each Tiger finished in the top five in their events.
"We did exactly what we wanted to do here," said Brett Halter, Missouri assistant coach. "When you throw in all of the components that go into the last couple of weeks-exams, fitness, illness-I was pleased when everything went well for us. Our main objective this early in the season was to go throw and learn how to compete. Overall, our team did very well."
For the men in the shot put event, Woolsey threw for 57 feet, 3? on his way to second in his first meet as a Tiger. Kansas' Gavin Ball took the title, winning by only 4? inches. Sophomore Bill Hobson (Katy, Texas) finished fourth at 56-4. Junior Adam Burla (Ellisville, Mo.) had a throw of 54-10, good for fifth place. Burla also finished fifth in the weight throw with a toss of 52 feet, 7? inches.
Strickland took second in the women's shot put event with a throw of 49 feet, 3 inches. Lindsey Markworth (Lexington, Mo.) finished fourth with a toss of 44 feet, 7? inches. Senior Ann Snider (Harrisonville, Mo.) took fifth in the weight throw with a toss of 51-3.
Final exams and Christmas break is next on the mind of the Mizzou throwers and the rest of the track and field team. The indoor season will go ahead at full-steam starting on Friday, January 16th, 2004, as the Tigers will host the Missouri Invitational, the first of three consecutive indoor meets in the Hearnes Fieldhouse.
