The University of Missouri men's and women's cross country team won their opening meet today as they hosted the Missouri Cross Country Challenge. The women's team was dominant taking the top 5 spots and taking 9 of the top 10 positions. The Tiger women were led by two freshmen, true freshman Valerie Lauver finished first followed closely by redshirt freshman Amanda Bales. Missouri harriers Serena Ramsey, Amy Chipman, and Jackie Pirtle rounded out the top five. Assistant cross country coach Rebecca Wilmes said, "I'm thrilled. We found out we are a very deep team. That's comforting because if a runner is having a bad day someone else can step right up." The Tigers easily defeated second place Iowa and third place Southeast Missouri State.
The Missouri Tiger men also took first place beating second place Wichita State by 26 points. Another freshman, Tim Ross finished first for the Tigers followed closely by teammate Ryan Hampton. Ross credited his team for his individual victory, "They deserve a lot of the credit. They told me to stay with them for the first part of the race and I did and that helped me out today." The Tiger men took 6 of the first 12 spots. The Tigers head to New York for the Iona Invitational on September 28th.
