CORVALLIS, Ore. - The University of Missouri volleyball team dropped a thrilling four-game match to Oregon State at the OSU Volleyball Showdown in Corvallis, Ore. The Beavers defeated MU 3-1, handing the Tigers their first loss of the season.
The Tigers opened the match with five straight points and went on to win the first game 31-29. OSU bounced back in game two, winning by a score of 30-21.
The two teams went back-and-forth in the third and fourth games. Game three featured 13 ties before Oregon State was able to come away with the 30-26 win. The Tigers and Beavers were tied 11 times in the fourth game with the Beavers eventually coming away with the 30-27 win.
The loss is the first regular season non-conference loss for Head Coach Susan Kreklow and Associate Head Coach Wayne Kreklow at Missouri. The last time a Tiger team lost a non-conference regular season game was on Sept. 3, 1999 to Northern Iowa. That loss also took place in the OSU Volleyball Showcase, the last, and only other, time MU traveled to Corvallis.
On Saturday, two redshirt freshman led Missouri offensively, as Shen Danru and Lindsey Noll each recorded 17 kills. Danru also added 11 digs. Freshman setter Lindsey Hunter had 59 assists as she made her second start for MU. Sophomore Sara Parks had 19 digs and junior Juliana Godoi had 18 to lead the Tigers defensively.
Danru and senior Christi Myers were named to the OSU Showcase All-Tournament Team for their performances over the three matches.
Mizzou is now 2-1 on the season, while OSU improved to 3-0. Next for the Tigers is a trip to Tuscaloosa, Ala. for the Crimson Tide Tournament next Friday and Saturday. MU will open by facing McNeese State on Friday at 5 p.m. CST. They will then face West Virginia on Saturday at 11 a.m. CST before taking on Alabama at 7 p.m. CST.
