Columbia, Mo. - The University of Missouri softball team fell victim to one tough inning giving up three runs in the top of the fourth. Oklahoma State's Cami Carter would make the three runs stand as she limited the Tigers to only three hits and one unearned run in the bottom of the seventh as the Cowgirls took Saturday's contest from the Tigers, 3-1 and the two day series, 2-0. Mizzou falls to 19-22 overall and 0-6 in the Big 12 while the Cowgirls move to 22-11 overall and 3-3 in the conference.
Both pitchers were excellent through the first three innings as the two squads battled to a 0-0 tie. Missouri's Ingrid Werner corralled the Cowgirls allowing only three hits and no runs through three. However, the OSU hitters would catch up with Werner in the top of the fourth. OSU's Jade Lindly hit her 11th home run of the season to open the fourth and the Cowgirls would spring for two more runs on two more hits off of Werner. Sophomore Morgan LeCluyse would throw out leadoff batter Jenny Kipp out at the plate with a perfect shot from center after a single by Casey O'Neil to record the final out of the fourth but not before OSU jumped out to a 3-0 lead.
Freshman Erin Kalka would enter the game in the fifth and would pitch three scoreless innings of ball giving up only one hit and the Tigers did mount a two-out comeback in the bottom of the seventh. Freshman Heather Kunkel singled in junior Melanie Fisher to make the score 3-1, but Carter would close the book on the Tigers striking out sophomore pinch-hitter Daisy Mettlach to end the game.
The Tigers will now face rival Kansas in a crucial game on Sunday at University Field. If Mizzou can pull out a win on Sunday, it would give head coach Jay Miller 700 career wins in 20 years as a head coach. For ticket information or more information on Mizzou softball, log on to www.mutigers.com.
