COLUMBIA, Mo.- The Iowa Hawkeyes took advantage of a Missouri men's swimming and diving team that was not at full strength on Friday night, defeating the Tigers by a score of 165-133 at the MU Natatorium in Columbia. Iowa won nine of the 16 events, including both relays in the victory. The Tigers were without their top swimmer, junior Matt Ferrarelli, who is nursing a fracture in his elbow. His status is day-to-day.
After Iowa won the opening relay, the Tigers bounced back, thanks to a big swim by freshman Josh Boyd in the 1650 freestyle. Boyd won the event by breaking a pool record with a time of 15:57.82. Iowa's Marko Milenkovic came in second place, also under the pool record time with a mark of 16:06.82.
The Tigers hung with Iowa most of the night. Matt North and Dan Knudson took second and third place respectively in the 100 breaststroke, and then Missouri got back-to-back wins by Radu Miclaus in the 200 butterfly and freshman Justin Zeimetz in the 50 freestyle. Zeimetz and sophomore Tyler Belanger finished first and second in the 50 freestyle.
Junior diver Jamie Sweeney then took center stage in the one-meter diving competition. Sweeney, the lone Missouri competitor, defeated four Iowa divers, and broke the MU Natatorium record with a score of 320.025. Sweeney would later finish third in the three-meter competition.
Belanger and Zeimetz came out of the diving break and finished first and second respectively in the 100 freestyle to keep things close, but the Hawkeyes took control of the meet after that. Iowa took two of the top three places in the next three events to put the meet out of reach for Mizzou.
Missouri came back to win the 100 butterfly and 200 individual medley. Miclaus won the 100 fly in a time of 50.65. North and sophomore Stephen Darmitzel finished first and second respectively in the 200 IM.
The Tigers, now 3-3 in dual meet competition, will compete for the final time in the MU Natatorium this season tomorrow afternoon against the Evansville Purple Aces. The meet begins at 2:00 p.m.
