COLUMBIA, Mo. - The University of Missouri track and field team put on a show in front of the home crowd at day two of the Missouri Relays Saturday at Walton Stadium.
The sophomore throwing tandem of Christian Cantwell and Russ Bell either won or came in second in all of the throwing events.
Cantwell let loose on a 194-7 throw in the discus, which set a Missouri Relays meet and Walton Stadium record. The mark is also an NCAA provisional qualifying standard. The MU school record is held by the legendary Ben Plucknett (201-10), who was in attendance at the meet. Cantwell also took the top spot in the shot put (59-2), which is another provisional throw.
Bell, gripped-and-ripped a 179-0 in the hammer for the victory in the hammer. He finished second in the discus at 189-11 and that mark provisionally qualifies him. Bell also placed second in the shot put (55-9.75).
Senior Shomari Benton also picked up a win on the men's side, taking the long jump with a 23-2.75 leap. He led the Tiger sweep and was followed by fellow senior Ochuko Ekpere (22-11.25) and junior Ben Dean (22-9), in second and third respectively.
The MU women picked up 12 wins and set three meet records. Seniors Ashley Wysong and Sunny Gilbert headlined the Tiger women's success. Wysong won the 400m with a time of 55.89, while Gilbert earned the win in the 1500m (4:41.16). Junior Carla Grewe set a meet record in the discus with a throw of 146-8. Sophomore Abbe Ohneck also set a meet record en route to the victory in the long jump (18-1). Freshman Janae Strickland also etched her name in the record books with her 42-11 effort in the shot put, which earned her a victory.
The Tigers are in action again next week when they host the Fifth Annual Tom Botts Invitational Apr. 14, at Walton Stadium.
