ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- The University of Missouri baseball team scored seven runs in the first two innings against Saint Louis Tuesday night at the Billiken Sports Complex. The Tigers used that scoring explosion to record an 11-6 victory over the Billikens.
Missouri opened the game with four runs in the first inning. After Jayce Tingler walked, W.T. Hoover and Ryan Stegall hit back-to-back doubles for a 2-0 lead. Stegall stole third base and scored on a throwing error for a 3-0 lead. Jon Williams singled, stole second and scored on a Wes Fewell single. After Saint Louis scored one run in the first inning, Tingler reached on a one-out bunt single. Hoover walked before Stegall hit a three-run home run to left field and give MU a 7-1 lead. The home run was Stegall's 28th of his career, tying him with Aaron Jaworowski (1995-97) and Mike Rallo (1997-2000) for seventh on Missouri's all-time list. The Tigers scored four runs in the fifth inning for an 11-1 lead. Two of the runs came in on a two-run single by Cody Ehlers. Saint Louis scored three runs in the fifth inning to make it 11-4.
Stegall had four hits in the contest, his first four-hit game of the season. Tingler had two hits as did Fewell and Ryan Rallo, who entered the game in the fifth inning.
Tingler, who entered the game reaching first base safely in 14 consecutive plate appearances, walked and had a bunt single in his first two at-bats. However, he was retired in the fourth inning to snap the streak one shy of the NCAA Division I record set by Texas Christian's Lew Williams in 1987.
Drew Endicott picked up the win for the Tigers, improving to 3-5 as Missouri moves to 26-17-1 overall. Saint Louis is now 19-22.
The two teams meet Wednesday at 7 p.m. at T.R. Hughes Ballpark in O'Fallon, Mo., in a wood bat game.
