
Texas Shuts Down Missouri 9-2

AUSTIN, Texas -- The University of Missouri baseball team suffered its fourth-straight loss Friday, falling 9-2 to Texas at Disch-Falk Field in Big 12 Conference action. Texas' Gerrit Simpson, who entered the game as the Big 12 leader in strikeouts, struck out 10 batters and allowed only four hits as he improved to 4-2 with the complete game win.
Missouri is 20-15-1 overall and 7-12 in the Big 12 while Texas is 27-15 overall and 14-5 in conference play.
The Longhorns opened a 3-0 lead after one inning as they used three hits, a walk and a Tiger error to produce the runs. UT added a run in the third inning before scoring four times in the fifth.
Missouri did not get a hit until the fifth inning when Mick Weiss led off the frame with a single to right field. After Weiss was picked off first, Jon Williams doubled to center. The Tigers eventually loaded the bases but stranded all three.
MU broke out for a run in the seventh inning. Weiss led off with a triple and scored on a Williams' single.
Texas scored one run in the seventh inning on a Jeff Ontiveros solo homer.
The Tigers added a run in the ninth inning for the final margin. Wes Fewell extended his hitting streak to seven games, driving in the Weiss - who opened the inning with a walk - with a single to centerfield.
Missouri and Texas will meet in game two of the series Saturday at 2 p.m.
NOTE: The Missouri-Saint Louis contest which was rained out on April 10 will now be played April 25. The game, which will feature wood bats, will be played at T.R. Hughes Ballpark in O'Fallon, Mo.
