
Missouri Erupts, Downs Texas Tech

COLUMBIA, Mo. -- The University of Missouri baseball team made the most of the eighth inning as it downed Texas Tech 14-9 Sunday afternoon in Big 12 Conference action at Taylor Stadium/Simmons Field. Missouri pounded out 11 hits in the eighth inning to score the nine runs.
Missouri entered the eighth inning trailing 9-5. Mick Weiss doubled to left field to open the inning. Weiss scored on Lee Laskowski's single to right field to make it 9-6. Pinch-hitter W.T. Hoover singled to left before Wes Fewell reached on an infield single to load the bases. Kurt Propst, celebrating his 22nd birthday, singled to right to score Laskowski. After one out, Jayce Tingler singled to center to score Hoover and make it 9-8. Jon Williams singled to center to score Fewell and Propst and give MU a 10-9 lead. Tingler scored when a pickoff attempt went awry. Weiss doubled for the second time in the inning to score Williams. Laskowski singled before Hoover scored both runners with a double off of the centerfield wall and make it 14-9.
Ryan Stegall pitched 1-2-3 ninth inning to preserve the win for Pete Sansone, who entered the game in relief. Sansone is now 3-1 on the season.
Texas Tech took a 1-0 lead with a run in the first inning. Missouri put up five runs in the second inning. Laskowski led off the inning with a double down the right-field line. Felipe Tetelboin was hit by a pitch before Propst doubled to drive in Laskowski. The Tigers executed back-to-back safety squeeze plays by Luke Cassis and Tingler to give MU a 3-1 lead. Williams drove in Cassis with a single to center and Tingler scored on an infield out by Stegall to give the Tigers a 5-1 edge.
Texas Tech got a run back in the third inning on a Jason Rainey home run. Rainey hit his second home run of the game, this time a two-run shot to center, to make it 5-4 in the fifth inning.
The Red Raiders took a 7-5 lead in the sixth inning on a three-run home run by Chad Landry. Texas Tech used a solo home run by Gera Alvarez to take an 8-5 lead in the seventh inning. Rainey made it 9-5 with a double to right-center field to score Tyler Carson in the eighth inning to set up the Tigers' fireworks in the bottom half of the inning.
Laskowski had four hits for the third time this season while Williams had his fifth three-hit game of the year. Weiss also had three hits while Hoover, Propst and Cassis each had two hits.
Missouri improves to 19-11-1 overall and 7-8 in the Big 12 while the Red Raiders are 22-14 and 7-8 in league play.
Missouri will play Southeast Missouri State in Cape Girardeau, Mo., Tuesday at 6 p.m. The Tigers return to Big 12 Conference action next Friday (April 6) as they open a three-game series against Oklahoma at Taylor Stadium.
