COLUMBIA, Mo. -- Big innings powered the University of Missouri baseball team to eight runs after four innings Wednesday but an infield error gave the Tigers a 9-8 victory over Wichita State at Taylor Stadium/Simmons Field.
With the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, Ryan Rallo hit a slow roller to third base. The WSU third baseman, Casey Walkup, threw a one-hopper to first base which eluded the first baseman and allowed Jayce Tingler to score the winning run. The victory was the 200th career triumph for Missouri head coach Tim Jamieson and gave the Tigers a 5-7-1 overall mark. Wichita State falls to 5-5.
The Tigers got on the board first when Jon Williams homered to right-center field to give MU a 2-0 lead as he drove in Jayce Tingler who led off the first with a single. Missouri got another run in the first when Mick Weiss scored on a single by Wes Fewell. MU made it 5-1 in the second inning when Jayce Tingler drove in W.T. Hoover on a ground out and Williams drove in Kurt Propst.
The Shockers tied the score 5-5 in their half of the third inning when they turned six hits into four runs.
MU took an 8-5 lead in the fourth frame. With one out, Tingler reached on a bunt single. After advancing on a balk, Tingler moved to third base on an infield out. Ryan Stegall was hit by a pitch before Weiss singled to left field to drive in Tingler and Stegall. Weiss advanced to second on an outfield error and scored on single by Fewell.
Wichita State took advantage of three MU errors to score a run in the top half of the fifth inning to make it 8-6. The Shockers tied the game with a two-run home run by Justin McCarty - his second two-run homer of the game.
Tingler and Weiss each had three hits for the Tigers.
Missouri returns to Big 12 Conference action Friday at 6 p.m. at Kansas. The two schools will then head to Columbia play Saturday (3 p.m.) and Sunday (2 p.m.).
