LINCOLN, Neb. - Shaun Marcum, a freshman pitcher from Excelsior Springs, Mo., threw his first complete game at Missouri to lead the Tigers to a 3-2 win Sunday at Buck Beltzer Stadium in Big 12 Conference play.
Marcum allowed only five hits and struck out four batters to improve to 2-0 on the season as Missouri won the best-of-three series against Nebraska, 2-1. The Cornhuskers, who are ranked fifth by Collegiate Baseball, won the opener Saturday 14-4 but Missouri won the second game Saturday 6-2 and won Sunday.
The series win over Nebraska marks the second-straight best-of-three series Missouri has won over an opponent ranked in the nation's top 10. Missouri won two games against Pepperdine last weekend (March 17-18).
After Nebraska took a 1-0 lead after the first inning, Missouri got the offense in gear and put three runs on the board in the second. Lee Laskowski continued his hot hitting with a double to lead off the inning. Laskowski got a hit for the fourth-straight at bat. Cody Ehlers singled to center to score Laskowski. Felipe Tetelboin was hit by a pitch before both Ehlers and Tetelboin advanced on a sacrifice. Jayce Tingler singled to center to score Ehlers and chase Nebraska starter Mike Sillman. Tetelboin would score on a balk to give MU a 3-1 lead.
Nebraska used two hits and walk to cut into Missouri's lead with a run in the seventh inning. However, Marcum got out of the jam, allowing one run and keeping MU in the lead, 3-2.
Missouri improves to 15-10-1 and 5-7 in Big 12 while Nebraska falls to 17-7 and 5-2.
Missouri will complete a five-game road swing as the Tigers head to Arkansas State for a two-game series. Game one of the series is 7 p.m. Tuesday.
