Columbia, Mo. - The Missouri softball team opened conference play Saturday against Nebraska, who beat the Tigers 4-1 in four extra innings.
Mizzou held the Huskers scoreless for nine innings before the Huskers would score one in the 10th and three in the 11th to win the game.
Husker pitcher Leigh Ann Walker and Tiger pitcher Stephanie Falk were locked in a duel through regulation play and two innings into overtime before either team could set anything up offensively. In the tenth, the international tie breaker (putting a runner on second to start the inning) was put into effect, which would be the difference in the game.
The Huskers scored first in the tenth when tie breaker runner Peaches James would score off a single by centerfielder Kim Ogee. Down one in the bottom of the third extra inning, the Tigers would tie the game when junior Erin Erickson hit a double to left center that would score Heather Allister, forcing another inning of play.
In the 11th, the Huskers proved to be too much for the Tigers. Jamie Fuente scored off a single by Nicole Trimboli, and Trimboli and Amanda Buchholz scored when James hit a single to center field. There was a play at the plate on Trimboli, but the throw was muffed that would allow Buchholz to score the unearned run. The Tigers could not answer in the bottom of the inning and lost the game 4-1.
The Tigers will have a chance to even the score tomorrow (Sunday) at 1 p.m. when they take on the Huskers in the second of a two-game series.
