COLUMBIA, Mo.- The Missouri men's and women's swimming and diving teams took care of business at the MU Natatorium in Columbia on Saturday afternoon. Fresh off victories over Truman State on Friday night, both the men's and women's squads defeated Southern Illinois-Carbondale on Saturday afternoon. The men's team improved to 2-1 in dual meet competition with a 143-98 victory. The Tiger women remain undefeated (4-0) with a 163.5-73.5 win over the Salukis.
The Mizzou women wasted no time in getting momentum on their side. The 400 medley relay team made up of Sarah Lo, Tiffany Bohon, Becca Dawson and Andrea Nigh shattered the MU Natatorium record by over two seconds (3:51.13) en route to a first place finish. The Tiger relays took first and second place in the event to take a quick 15-2 advantage over SIU.
The route was on as Missouri took first place in each and every event on the afternoon. Freshman Amanda Maret enjoyed the best day of her collegiate career on Saturday on the diving boards. Maret won both the one and three-meter events. Her score of 270.15 on the three-meter board qualified her for the NCAA Zone Meet that will take place on March 15-16. The Tigers dominated the diving boards as fellow frosh Anna Massey took second place on both boards while senior Erin Wilke was third in both events.
In the pool, sophomore Sarah Lo, who won two events and broke a pool record on Friday night, continued her dominance on Saturday. Lo led a Missouri sweep in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:07.41. Freshmen Becca Dawson and Megan Morford finished second and third respectively. Lo also won the 200 backstroke event in a time of 2:03.64. Her time was just off her previous pool record time that she set earlier in the year against Texas A&M.
Sophomore Lizza Igoe was also a double-winner for Mizzou. Igoe led a Tigers' sweep of the 200 freestyle in a time 1:54.50. Molly Vetter and Lindsay Palbykin finished second and third. Igoe and Vetter also took first and second places respectively in the 500 freestyle.
Other winners on the women's side included Katy Chandler in the 1000 freestyle, Andrea Nigh in the 50 freestyle, Rebecca Wolfe in the 200 butterfly and Tara Brooks in the 100 freestyle. Brooks, along with Ellen Cross and Palbykin, took first, second and third places in the 100 free.
The Missouri men expected a big challenge from the Salukis, but the Tigers got off to an early lead and never gave it up. The 400 medley relay team of Matt Ferrarelli, Matt North, Radu Miclaus and Tyler Belanger won the their event in a time of 3:26.86 as the Tigers jumped out to a 13-4 lead after one event.
A sweep in the 1000 freestyle put all of the momentum in the Tigers' favor. Freshman Josh Boyd, who also won the 500 freestyle, captured the 1000 free in a time of 9:38.37. Dane Pedersen came in second place for the Tigers followed by freshman Blake Davis.
Sophomore Tyler Belanger was a double-winner for the first time in his career on Saturday. Belanger edged out teammate Justin Zeimetz for first place (21.42) in the 50 freestyle, and later won the 100 freestyle in a time of 46.94.
Junior Matt Ferrarelli was solid as usual for Mizzou. Ferrarelli cruised to a victory in the 200 individual medley and later led a Missouri sweep of the 200 backstroke. Ferrarelli was followed by Dustin McKnight, who captured two second place finishes on Friday night against Truman State, and freshman Jacob Thomas.
The Tigers also received a strong performance by junior Jamie Sweeney on the diving boards. Sweeney won both the one and three meter boards on Saturday.
