Columbia, Mo.-The University of Missouri rounded out the 2001 regular season with a 3-1 victory over Eastern Illinois giving its three graduating seniors, Mandy Waters, Steph Brennan and Dyana Russell a win in their last game at Audrey J. Walton Soccer Complex. The victory takes the Tigers to a 12-7 season record. Missouri finished Big 12 Conference play going 5-5 to finish fifth in league standings.
The Tigers battled the Panthers through a scoreless first half. Mizzou outshot Eastern Illinois just 8-to-5 in the period with a 5-to-3 shot on goal differential. The period proved physical as the teams tallied 12 fouls and a yellow card in the first 45 minutes of play. Russell and Waters worked together to put forth another All-America effort in the Tiger backfield.
Missouri stuttered into the second period allowing Eastern Illinois to pound the MU box ripping in three close shots in the first few minutes of play. Mizzou struggled to find its rhythm, but EIU trampled the effort with a goal in the 67th minute of play. The Panthers sent a corner kick into the Missouri box where goalkeeper Megan Duncan was able to punch the ball out. Before she could reposition however, EIU's McKenzie Smith redirected a shot into the Tiger net.
The goal proved to be the spark that ignited the Missouri energy. Missouri came back with a rejuvenated effort to score three goals within five minute of play.
Senior Steph Brennan brought a ball from the half and made a long pass to Tamara Kochen just outside the box. Kochen flicked the ball toward the Panther goalkeeper, but before she could capture the ball, Adriene Davis came in from the side to cross the ball over the goal line to tie the score 1-1.
Midfielders Suzy Probst and Karen Bauer paired up to score the game-winner for MU just one minute later. Bauer dribbled a ball up the right sideline and crossed a shot through to Probst who launched a perfect shot into the upper left corner of the net. Just four minutes later, Bauer performed the same task sending a ball back through the center where freshman Shea Swoboda ripped the Tiger's third goal of the game.
Overall, Missouri outshot Eastern Illinois 23-to-12, including 13 shots on goal. Mizzou upped its offensive effort during the second period dishing out 15 shots against EIU.
Duncan earned the win for the Tigers playing all 90 minutes of the game. She allowed one goal and made seven saves.
Up next, Missouri travels to the Big 12 Tournament in San Antonio, Texas, Nov. 8-11. The Tigers face Kansas in the first round of the tournament on Thursday.
