
Tigers in Second Place at Pittsburgh

COLUMBIA, Mo.- The Missouri women's swimming and diving team continued its' domination of the Pittsburgh Invite on Saturday. The Tigers have racked up 1,034.5 points in the first two days of the three-day invite and lead second-place Pittsburgh (680 points) by 354.5 points. Miami (FL) and Ohio State are third and fourth place respectively.
The Missouri men are in second place with 664 points. Pittsburgh, ranked No. 20 in the country, leads the meet with 1,033 points. Ohio State is in third while Miami is in fourth.
Junior Matt Ferrarelli was the standout for the Mizzou men on Saturday. Ferrarelli won two events on the evening - the 400 individual medley and the 100 backstroke. Ferrarelli earned an NCAA consideration cut time in the 400 IM with 3:53.81. He won the 100 backstroke in a time of 50.66. Dustin McKnight came in fifth for Missouri in the 400 IM in a time of 4:07.27.
Radu Miclaus was also a winner for the Tigers. Miclaus won the 100 butterfly in a time of 49.70. Senior Shane Whildin came in third place in a time of 49.98.
The Tigers chalked up several points in the 100 breaststroke. Freshman Matt North came in fourth place in a time of 57.83. McKnight came in fifth place in a time of 58.47. Stephen Darmitzel came in sixth place in a time of 58.92.
Missouri Jamie Sweeney came in fifth place on the one-meter diving board. He finished seventh last night on the three-meter board.
The Mizzou women got off to a fast start by taking second and third places in the 200 medley relay. The team of Sarah Lo, Mariona Costa, Becca Dawson and Andrea Nigh turned in a time of 1:45.22, the third fastest time in school history.
The Tigers took first, third and fourth places in the 400 individual medley. Sophomore Rebecca Wolfe won the event in a time of 4:26.37, the third fastest time in school history. Freshman Belinda Wood, who enjoyed the best night of her young career, came in third with the fifth fastest time in school history (4:29.18). Fellow freshman Megan Morford was fourth in a time of 4:31.96.
Wood also posted a fast time in the 100 butterfly. Her time of 57.66 seconds was good for third place. Freshman Becca Dawson won the race in a time of 56.65, the second fastest time in school history. Andrea Nigh was fifth for the Tigers (59.25).
The Tigers took second and third in the 200 freestyle event. Katy Chandler was the second place finisher in a time of 1:51.78, a personal best time and third fastest time in school history. Lizza Igoe climbed a spot to fourth place in school history with a time of 1:52.12 and third place finish.
Freshman Mariona Costa was the first Tiger to break a school record on the weekend. Costa recorded a time of 1:03.20 in the preliminary race of the 100 breaststroke. She finished second in the event, but her time was also good enough to earn an NCAA consideration cut. Junior Tiffany Bohon improved upon her third fastest time in school history (1:04.56) in finishing in third place.
Sophomore Sarah Lo also earned an NCAA consideration cut time. Lo won the 100 backstroke in a time of 56.23, improving on her second fastest time in school history. Freshman Amanda Morford cracked Mizzou's all-time top five list with a time of 56.76, the third fastest time in school history. Morford finished third followed by Ellen Cross (fourth).
Missouri's divers placed four divers in the top eight. Freshman Anna Massey finished fourth on the three-meter board. Erin Wilke came in fifth place followed by Amanda Maret and Sarah Sprigg.
The Tigers won the 800 freestyle relay in a time of 7:32.99, the fourth fastest time in school history. The team consisted of Tara Brooks, Lizza Igoe, Lindsay Palbykin and Katy Chandler.
"I am very happy with the way both the men and women are swimming," said Head Coach Brian Hoffer. "Mariona (Costa) and Sarah (Lo) were just incredible today. Everyone is contributing."
"The men are really competing," said Hoffer. "Matt (Ferrarelli) had a great night tonight, but everyone is really starting to put it together."
