The drought is officially over. The Tigers have come back to Columbia and they have come back to WIN! The Missouri Softball team ended their eight-game losing streak with a 7-2 win over Southern Illinois today at University Field. The game was originally scheduled to be played Wednesday in Edwardsville, Ill., but had to be moved and rescheduled. Since Southern Illinois was originally supposed to be the home team, they were the home team today.
The Tigers got heir seven runs on 13 hits and two Saluki errors. The Salukis scored two runs on four hits and three Tiger errors.
Missouri had a chance to score right away in the first inning, but the Saluki defense threw out Stacy Gemeinhardt at home. There was no stopping the Tigers in the second inning though. Dara Throneburg led off with a single to left-center field. She advanced to second on a Christy Skouby sacrifice bunt. Lindsey Jacoby singled to left field and Throneburg advanced to third. Then Erin Erickson stepped up and ripped a two-RBI single to left field to score Jacoby and Throneburg. Erickson advanced to second on the throw home. Two batters later, Gemeinhardt drove a double to left center to score Erickson and put the Tigers up 3-0.
The Salukis scored one run in the bottom of the inning. With two outs, Jamie Campbell doubled to left field. Karie Fortman reached on an error by Erin Erickson and Campbell advanced to third. Jessica Laughry singled to left field to score Campbell.
No one scored again until the fifth inning. Gemeinhardt led off by reaching base on an error by the Saluki shortstop. She advanced to second on a Sara Vassmer sacrifice bunt and to third on a wild pitch. Linda Swarts hit a RBI-single to left field to score Gemeinhardt. The Salukis brought in Katie Kloess to relieve starting pitcher Tracy Remspecher. Swarts advanced to second on a passed ball. She scored on a Amy Farmer ground out, putting the Tigers up 5-1.
Southern Illinois Answered with a run in the bottom of the inning. The first two batters struck out, then Jenny Guenther reached on an error by Vassmer. Guenther stole second and Meier walked. Viefhaus slammed an RBI-double to right field to score Guenther. Ingrid Werner came in for Missouri to relieve starting pitcher Stephanie Falk. Werner did her job as she struck out six of the nine batters she faced in the next 2.1 innings.
Missouri scored their final two runs in the top of the seventh. Vassmer scored on a Throneburg RBI-single and Swarts scored on a Skouby Single to give the Tigers the 7-2 win.
Stephanie Falk got the win for the Tigers. Her record improves to 15-15. The two Tiger pitchers combined for 12 strikeouts compared to Southern Illinois' two from three pitchers. Tracy Remspecher took the loss for the Salukis.
The Tigers are ready for their final regular season games this weekend. They face the Baylor Bears on University Field at 1 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Sunday will be Senior Day and all the Tiger seniors will be honored. The Tigers need to win both games to have a chance at finishing in the top half of the conference. Following this weekend's games, the Tigers have a week off for finals before leaving for the Big 12 Conference Tournament in Oklahoma City. Their seed will not be known until the weekend before the tournament, as most other teams do not finish until next week.
