COLUMBIA, MO -- Sophomore righthander Shane Komine struck out 16 Missouri Tigers Friday night as the Nebraska Cornhuskers won a 7-2 decision at Taylor Stadium at Simmons Field.
The effort gave Komine, last week's Big 12 Conference and national "pitcher of the week", 33 strikeouts in his last two outings and moved him into second place on the Nebraska single-season list. He has 103 strikeouts this season, second to Troy Brohawn's 123 in 1993. He scattered six hits and went the distance in raising his record to 6-3. He fanned the last five Missouri batters.
Nebraska (24-11, 11-8) took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a double by John Cole and a single by Brandt Vlieger and never trailed. Matt Hooper hit a two-run home run, his eighth of the year, in the top of the fifth. The Cornhuskers rolled up 18 hits with Dan Johnson, Vlieger and Adam Shabala each totaling three.
Trailing 3-0, Missouri (22-14, 8-8) got a leadoff single from J.R. Warner and a double from the Big 12's leading hitter, Ryan Stegall, in the fourth inning but scored only one run on a ground out by Landon Brandes.
With the score 6-1 in the seventh, Jon Williams and Wes Fewell each doubled to score a run, but Komine got out of trouble by striking out the side.
Stegall went two-for-four and raised his batting average to .418 overall and .471 in conference play.
The series continues with a 5 p.m. game on Saturday. Missouri's Pete Sansone (4-0) will pitch against Nebraska's Scott Fries (2-0). Persons who attend Saturday afternoon's Black-and-Gold Football Game can gain free admission to the baseball game by presenting their football ticket stub.
The series concludes Sunday at 1 p.m.
