COLUMBIA, MO Ryan Stegall's ninth-inning single over the heads of a drawn in outfield drove in Jayce Tingler with the winning run Wednesday afternoon as the Missouri Tigers completed a two-game series sweep over the Arkansas State Indians with a 7-6 victory.
MU pinch-hitter Mick Weiss led off the ninth inning by drawing a walk from ASU pitcher Brent Self. Tingler reached on a fielder's choice when his sacrifice bunt attempt failed and pinch-runner W.T. Hoover was forced out at second base. Self threw wildly past first baseman Brandon Maricle trying to pick Tingler off and the freshman scooted all the way to third base. After J.R. Warner, who had tripled home two runs in a four-run Missouri seventh inning, was walked intentionally.
Stegall, the number-three hitter in the Big 12 Conference with a .403 batting average, took a 0-1 pitch over the right fielder's head to drive in the game-winning run.
Missouri upped its record to 11-8, while Arkansas State lost its fourth straight game and is also 11-8.
MU led 2-1 in the fifth inning when ASU chased Tigers starter Pete Sansone with a five-run outburst to take a 6-2 lead. The Indians loaded the bases with a single by Nick Martin, a walk to Tommy Goforth and a bunt single by Reed Bredensteiner. Kyle Brunen then doubled in two runs and Maricle doubled home another. P.J. McGinnis relieved Sansone and walked Allen Mazzanti, then allowed an RBI single to Darrin Hope.
Lefty Matt Hobbs entered the game as Mizzou's third pitcher of the inning and shut down the Indian rally, but not before another run scored on a fielder's choice ground out off the bat of George Sterner.
Mizzou tied the game in the seventh on five hits. Luke Cassis drove in Kurt Propst for the Tigers' first run of the inning, and after Warner's triple scored two more, Warner scored on a passed ball.
Junior Ralph McCasland pitched the eighth and ninth innings for the Tigers and allowed only one hit while striking out two. He earned the victory to even his record at 2-2. Self pitched two innings in relief of starter Tony Arthor and took the loss (1-2).
Missouri hosts Bowling Green State for a three-game series this weekend at Taylor Stadium at Simmons Field. Friday's game starts at 7 p.m., and will be followed by contests Saturday and Sunday at 2 p.m. and 12 p.m., respectively.
