LUBBOCK, TX -- For the first time since the formation of the Big 12 Conference, the Missouri Tigers won the season series with Texas Tech by winning 6-5 on Sunday afternoon at Dan Law Field. Missouri won 16-14 in 10 innings on Friday and Tech won 11-6 in Saturday's game.
Red Raider starting pitcher Kevin Tracey tossed his second complete game of the season. He allowed six runs (four earned) on nine hits, four walks and a season-high eight strikeouts. However, it wasn't enough as four Texas Tech errors proved to be too costly for the Red Raiders.
Tech (8-8, 1-2) started quickly with a two-run blast to left center from Chaz Eiguren. The designated hitter finished the day 3-5 with three RBI to lead the Red Raiders at the plate. In the series, Eiguren was 9-15 (.600) with two home runs, five runs and nine RBI. He has hit five homers in the last four games.
Missouri (6-5, 2-1) responded with two runs in the fourth and three in the fifth. In the fourth, Landon Brandes was hit by a pitch and scored on a triple to center field by Nick Wilfong. He scored on Wes Fewell's ground-out to second base. In the fifth, J.R. Warner doubled in one run and Brandes' double plated two for the Tigers.
The Red Raiders tied the game in the bottom of the seventh when Eiguren drove in Marco Cunningham who led off the inning with a single to centerfield. In the top of the eighth, Missouri scored the winning run on a bases-loaded infield single by Warner in which Tracey missed the bag on a throw from first baseman Mark Austry.
Missouri's bullpen first gave the Tigers a chance to win and then closed the door in the final innings. Drew Endicott pitched five-and-a-third innings in relief of starter Pete Sansone who left the game in the second inning. He was followed to the hill by Matt Hobbs, who earned his first victory (1-0), P.J. McGinnis and Ryan Stegall. Stegall pitched a perfect ninth to earn his third save.
Wilfong had three of Missouri's nine hits, while Warner and Brandes each had two RBI.
Missouri hosts Western Illinois on Tuesday night at 7 p.m., at Taylor Stadium at Simmons Field, and again at 3 p.m. Wednesday afternoon, before the Texas Longhorns come calling for a Big 12 series on Friday-Saturday-Sunday. Texas (13-3, 3-0) swept Iowa State this weekend in its first conference series.
