MALIBU, CA -- Junior catcher Dane Sardinha and sophomore shortstop Tony Garcia each collected three hits to help Pepperdine to a 10-8 victory over Missouri in a non-conference game that took 3:35 to play Saturday afternoon at Eddy D. Field Stadium.
Pepperdine pounded out a season-high 14 hits and used seven pitchers in the game to record its second straight win and improve to 3-5 on the season. The loss dropped Missouri to 0-2.
Sardinha had the big blow of the game as he hit a grand slam in the first inning to highlight a six-run first inning that gave the Waves a 4-3 lead. The home run was the 29th of Sardinha's career and moved him into a second-place tie on Pepperdine's all-time career home run list with G.J. Raymundo.
Sophomore pitcher Matt Wersel pitched 3.1 innings of relief to earn the victory and improve to 2-0 on the year. Sophomore left-hander Noah Lowry worked the final 1.1 innings to record his first career save.
Neither starting pitcher, Pepperdine's Greg Ramirez and Missouri's Ralph McCasland was able to get out of the first inning. Ramirez worked two-thirds of an inning, surrendering two hits, three runs and two walks before being relieved.
McCasland also pitched just two-thirds of an inning and allowed four hits, six runs and one walk.
With Pepperdine leading 8-7 in the sixth inning, the Tigers loaded the bases with one out. But Wes Fewell, who led the Tigers on the day with two hits, grounded into a 3-6-3 double play that snuffed the Tiger threat.
Down 9-7 an inning later, the Tigers loaded the bases again with two outs. Nick Wilfong scored on a wild pitch, but Mizzou's leading hitter, Ryan Stegall, grounded out to shortstop to end the frame.
After the Waves padded their lead with a run in the eighth, the Tigers stranded two more baserunners in the eighth, and went down 1-2-3 in the ninth.
The Tigers managed just seven hits off of seven Pepperdine pitchers, but also drew 11 walks, and left 12 men on base. Fourteen times the Tigers went down on strikes.
Junior college transfer Jon Harris will pitch for Missouri on Sunday, as Coach Tim Jamieson's crew seeks to salvage one game from the three-game set before they return home.
The two teams close out their three-game series on Sunday at Eddy D. Field Stadium beginning at noon.
