Austin, Texas - According to an ad in Wednesday night's Missouri-Texas Game Program, October is fire prevention and awareness month in Texas. After the University of Missouri volleyball team's 15-12, 15-8, and 15-10 sweep of Texas, the Longhorns were well aware of the on-fire Tigers. Winners of four of their last five matches, Mizzou is now 14-2 overall and 5-2 in the Big 12 Conference.
MU used great serving and superior fundamental passing to defeat the Longhorns in front of a rowdy crowd of 1,710, the second largest crowd the Tiger have played in front of this season. The first game was a battle with both teams coming out a bit rusty trading point for point. Three points by Mizzou junior Rachael Taylor at 9-7 put Mizzou up 12-7 as the Tigers went on to win the game, 15-12.
MU was red-hot to open the second game grabbing a 9-1 lead, mostly on the shoulders of excellent serving by Taylor, sophomore Lisa Morris, and junior Nikki Myhra. The Longhorns stormed back with some excellent serving of their own and pulled to 12-8 with the Tigers, but an MU timeout and three straight points served by Myhra sealed the second game.
In the third game, the Horns came out kicking and charging, jumping out to a 5-0 lead. After a Mizzou time out, Morris took the match over from the service line serving 10 straight points and moved the Tigers out in front , 12-6 on their way to a 15-10 game and match victory.
Junior Kristen Johnson led a balanced offensive attack for the Tigers with 11 kills while Morris and sophomore Christi Myers both collected nine kill on the match. Morris was only one kill away from her sixth double of the season as she also recorded 11 digs. Myers continued her consistently solid hitting slating nine kills and a .471 hitting percentage on the night.
The win moves the Tigers to 14-2 on the year and 5-2 in the Big 12 Conference. MU is now 1-1 in two trips to the state of Texas with two visits to the Lone Star State remaining. Mizzou has a much needed week off now and will return to action on Wed., Oct. 11 when they host arch-rival Kansas in the Hearnes Center at 7:00 p.m..
