COLUMBIA, Mo. - In front of 820 fans at Carroll, Iowa's high school gymnasium, the Missouri Tigers (10-19, 4-14) defeated the Iowa State Cyclones (2-23, 0-18) in three games, 15-13, 16-14, 16-14. Unfortunately for the Cyclones, it was their 22nd straight loss.
Junior Heather Gerber got the start at setter and played the entire match, tallying 60 assists. She also had 10 digs and was close to her first double-double of the season with eight kills. Junior Annette Luyten and sophomore Naaron Branson had their eighth and seventh double-doubles of the season. Luyten recorded 13 kills and 13 digs, hitting a match-leading .545 clip. Branson had a career-high 22 kills and 12 digs. For both, it was their second double-double of the week. As a team, Missouri hit .223.
With the exception of hitting errors, the first game was probably the best for Missouri. Even though the Tigers had 13 errors to the Cyclones four, Missouri was able to grab the lead at 2-1 and hold it until a brief 13-13 tie before taking the win. Luyten and freshman Christi Myers both hit above .500. Luyten hit .583 while Myers hit .556. The Tigers also recorded four service aces, their total for the match.
The Tigers finish up the 1999 season at the Hearnes Center Wed., Nov. 24 at 7:00 p.m. They will take on nationally ranked Nebraska.
